Astronomers from the University of Manchester and the University of the Western Cape announced the first direct detection of an extremely faint 21-centimeter radio signal from neutral hydrogen gas at redshifts of about z=0.32 and z=0.44 — corresponding to roughly 3.7 and 4.8 billion light-years away — using South Africa’s 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope. It’s the first time cosmic hydrogen at these distances has been directly detected by a single observatory rather than by combining radio and optical data from multiple instruments; the team analyzed 96 hours of MeerKAT data and published the results in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
The technique, known as hydrogen intensity mapping, lets astronomers survey vast volumes of the universe far more efficiently than galaxy-by-galaxy surveys, and is expected to become a major science driver for the upcoming Square Kilometre Array Observatory, for which MeerKAT is a precursor instrument.
