September 6 Roundup: Iran Claims Missile Strikes on a US Carrier and Destroyer as CENTCOM Sinks Three Tankers, Witkoff and Kushner Meet Zelensky in Kyiv After Moscow, and Isar Aerospace Puts Europe Into Orbit for the First Time

Previously: September 5’s roundup covered a US strike on an Iranian tanker near Kharg Island, Israeli strikes killing three in Lebanon after a Hezbollah drone attack, Witkoff and Kushner’s arrival in Moscow with a peace proposal, and Anthropic’s Claude formalizing Fermat’s Last Theorem.

Middle East — Iran Claims Missile Strikes on US Carrier and Destroyer, CENTCOM Sinks a Tanker and Disables Two More#

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said its Aerospace Force fired several ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer it accused of “harassing” Iranian vessels and enforcing a naval blockade, claiming both warships were damaged and withdrew from the area. CENTCOM disputes the account, saying Iran launched ballistic missiles toward the two US Navy ships and that both evaded the attacks with no American personnel harmed — leaving battle-damage assessment a central, unresolved dispute between the two sides. The claimed missile launch came after IRGC naval forces said they targeted three oil tankers traveling an “unauthorised route” through the Strait of Hormuz and three vessels affiliated with the United States, plus a US naval drone, warning shippers not to “be deceived by the American terrorist army.”

The exchange followed CENTCOM strikes on three Iranian crude-oil tankers tied to the IRGC’s shadow fleet: the M/T Downy was permanently disabled off Kharg Island, the M/T Stark 1 was permanently disabled near Jask, and the M/T Kylo — evacuated by its crew before being hit — was “completely destroyed” and sank in the Gulf of Oman. CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper said the strikes were retaliation for Iran’s ballistic-missile launches at two US warships: “If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost — taking out three of yours.” The tit-for-tat marks a sharp escalation in the naval war in the Gulf that has run alongside the wider conflict since late February, building directly on the Kharg Island tanker strike covered in September 5’s roundup.

Ukraine — Witkoff and Kushner Meet Zelensky in Kyiv After Carrying Peace Proposal to Putin in Moscow#

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for their first-ever visit to Ukraine, meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky in downtown Kyiv’s St. Sophia Square a day after presenting Vladimir Putin with what the US has called a proposal to end the war. Zelensky said Ukraine was ready for a “constructive” discussion with the American representatives, continuing the diplomatic push that began with the envoys’ Moscow meeting and the Kremlin’s three-day halt on strikes against Kyiv detailed in September 5’s roundup. The visit is the centerpiece of a renewed attempt to translate the temporary truce gesture into a substantive negotiation, though neither side has disclosed the specific terms on the table.

The talks come as fighting continued elsewhere along the front: Ukraine’s air force said its air defenses shot down or jammed 88 of 108 drones and missiles Russia fired overnight, while Ukrainian officials reported hundreds of Russian strikes across Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions in the preceding 24 hours. The contrast between the halt over Kyiv and continued bombardment elsewhere underscores how fragile and geographically narrow the current de-escalation is, even as the highest-level US engagement with Kyiv in months gets underway.

Science & Space — Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum Rocket Reaches Orbit, a First for Continental Europe#

German startup Isar Aerospace successfully put its Spectrum rocket into orbit on Saturday, lifting off from the company’s Andøya Spaceport launch complex in Norway at 10:12 pm CEST on a mission dubbed “Onward and Upward” — the first orbital launch ever conducted from continental European soil. The 28-meter, ten-engine rocket reached orbit roughly four minutes after liftoff, deploying six commercial and educational CubeSats along with an in-orbit technology-demonstration payload, on just its second flight after an earlier attempt was scrubbed by weather, technical issues, and a rogue boat that strayed into the launch corridor.

The milestone makes Isar the first commercial European launch company to reach orbit, ending decades of Europe’s dependence on non-European or state-run vehicles for independent access to space and adding a privately built alternative alongside ESA’s Ariane program. Spectrum is designed to carry payloads of up to 1,000 kg to low Earth orbit, positioning the company to compete for the growing market in small-satellite launches as Europe seeks more sovereign launch capacity.
