Frog-Gut Bacterium Eliminates All Colorectal Tumors in Mice with One Dose
Scientists at Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) have identified a bacterium from the intestines of Japanese tree frogs (Dryophytes japonicus) that achieved complete tumor elimination in a mouse colorectal cancer model with a single intravenous dose. The organism — Ewingella americana — is anaerobic, causing it to selectively accumulate in the low-oxygen environment surrounding tumors. Within 24 hours of injection, bacterial counts at the tumor site increased 3,000-fold; the bacteria simultaneously delivered a direct cytotoxic effect on cancer cells and activated the immune system, recruiting T cells, B cells, and neutrophils that produced additional tumor-killing cytokines. Published in Gut Microbes and reported July 9–10, the result represents 100% clearance in the tested mice.
No treatment derived from this research is imminent — mouse results routinely fail to translate to humans, and the mechanism by which E. americana evades systemic immune attack requires further characterization before human trials could be considered. But the study’s approach is distinct from existing microbiome-altering therapies: rather than reshaping the gut environment, it deploys a living bacterium directly as a targeted cytotoxic agent. The result joins the mRNA vaccine immune-pathway finding covered yesterday as the second significant oncology result in 48 hours.

AI Accelerates Discovery of Two New Superconductors
A team at Aalto University’s SuperC consortium, led by Professor Päivi Törmä, has reported the first machine-learning-guided discovery of new superconducting materials, published July 7 in npj Computational Materials. The method trained an ML model to screen vast numbers of candidate material combinations, routing only the most promising candidates to computationally expensive quantum physics calculations. Using this pipeline, the team identified two previously unknown superconductors — YRu₃B₂ and LuRu₃B₂ — both deriving their properties from electrons forming flat bands within a kagome lattice structure. Collaborators at Rice University (Professor Emilia Morosan’s group) synthesized and experimentally verified both compounds, with critical temperatures of 0.81 K and 0.95 K respectively.
The temperatures are far below room level — the SuperC consortium has set 2033 as a target for that milestone — but the value here is the workflow. Of more than 7,000 known superconductors, theorists had only successfully predicted the viability of around 20 before computational demands made wider screening intractable. The new ML pipeline extends that coverage into the billions of candidate materials. Room-temperature superconductors, if found, would transform energy transmission, medical imaging, and quantum computing hardware simultaneously; the bottleneck until now has been knowing where to look.

DRC Ebola: 1,792 Cases, Remdesivir and MBP-134 Trials Begin
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak has reached 1,792 confirmed cases and 625 deaths as of July 9 — up from the 1,460 cases and 452 deaths reported in the July 4 roundup five days ago. Ituri province remains the epicenter with 1,631 cases across 25 of its 36 health zones; North Kivu has 158 cases, and South Kivu three. In a significant development this week, DRC authorities launched the first clinical trials of remdesivir and MBP-134 as potential treatments for Bundibugyo-strain Ebola, for which no approved vaccine or specific antiviral currently exists.
The trajectory remains deeply concerning: roughly 340 new cases appeared in the five days since the July 4 update, a pace that ring vaccination and contact tracing have so far been unable to arrest. The WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on May 17; international response funding remains below what field teams have requested. The trial launch is the first genuine treatment prospect for this outbreak, though results are weeks away.
