July 4 Roundup: Record US Heat Dome, Meituan's 1.6T Model on Chinese Chips, Khamenei Funeral Begins, Ebola Now 1,460 Cases

Previously: July 1’s roundup covered three landmark SCOTUS decisions closing the term, the Iran–Hormuz southern corridor dispute, Venezuela’s earthquake toll nearing 2,000, and the DRC Ebola CDC Level One activation.

Record-Breaking July 4 Heat Dome Blankets the US#

A sprawling heat dome has parked over the eastern and central United States, placing more than 185 million people under heat alerts on Independence Day. Washington D.C. is forecast to hit 101°F — the hottest July 4 on record for the capital — and more than 300 temperature records are expected to fall across the country by end of Saturday. The heat is complicating President Trump’s America 250 celebration on the National Mall, where organizers have scrambled to add cooling stations and shorten outdoor programming windows.

The mass is a direct continuation of the European heat wave covered in the July 1 roundup that killed over 1,300 people before tracking westward across the Atlantic. Public health officials are warning that heat-related deaths could spike sharply among elderly and outdoor workers over the coming 72-hour window, particularly in cities with limited tree cover and aging housing stock.

Meituan Open-Sources 1.6-Trillion-Parameter AI Model Trained on Chinese Chips#

In the most significant AI open-source release since the US tightened export controls on NVIDIA hardware, Meituan dropped LongCat-2.0: a 1.6-trillion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model trained on a 50,000-card cluster of domestic Chinese chips — no NVIDIA GPUs used. The model is released under an MIT license and benchmarks at 59.5 on SWE-bench Pro, edging out GPT-5.5’s reported 58.6, with a 1-million-token context window and strong agentic coding performance. It has been leading open-source coding charts on OpenRouter in the days since its release.

The geopolitical subtext is direct: LongCat-2.0 is a proof-of-concept that frontier-scale AI training is no longer dependent on US-controlled hardware. Export controls that Washington designed to cap China’s AI compute ceiling appear not to have held at the 1.6T-parameter tier. The MoE architecture and domestic chip training stack are described in detail in Meituan’s technical release; researchers are already analyzing whether the benchmark parity with GPT-5.5 reflects genuine capability or task-specific tuning.

Khamenei State Funeral Begins; Iran’s Succession Vacuum Deepens#

Iran began a dayslong state funeral for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on July 3–4, with authorities expecting 15–20 million mourners in Tehran — potentially the largest state funeral in history. Khamenei was killed in the opening US–Israeli airstrike of the war on February 28. A tentative ceasefire MOU was signed before the funeral, but the IRGC issued a warning Friday that “any miscalculation will be met with a decisive and more crushing response than ever before.”

Iran has not publicly named a successor Supreme Leader, leaving one of the world’s most consequential theocratic authority structures without a clear line of succession at a moment of extreme military stress. The Assembly of Experts, which nominates a new supreme leader, is split between hardline and pragmatist factions; a contested or prolonged succession could alter the terms of any durable ceasefire agreement.

DRC Ebola Climbs to 1,460 Cases; Uganda Reports 20 Confirmed#

The Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has grown to 1,460 confirmed cases and 452 deaths as of July 1 — up from the 1,155 cases reported in the July 1 roundup just days ago. Uganda has added 20 confirmed cases including two deaths, and 17 health workers have died in the DRC alone. The WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on May 17; there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain.

The case doubling pace from roughly 1,100 to 1,460 in under a week underscores how far the outbreak remains from containment. Ituri province remains the epicenter, but spread into Uganda and across DRC provincial lines signals that ring-vaccination and contact tracing — the standard Ebola containment tools — are not keeping pace. International response funding remains below what WHO field teams have requested.

Habitable-Zone Super-Earth Confirmed 25 Light-Years Away#

Astronomers have confirmed GJ 3378b, a rocky super-Earth 2.3 times Earth’s mass, orbiting within the habitable zone of its red dwarf host star just 25 light-years away — one of the nearest potentially habitable planets ever found. The planet receives about 90% of the solar radiation Earth gets from the Sun and completes one orbit every 21 days. The findings, published June 30 in The Astrophysical Journal, used the Habitable-zone Planet Finder at McDonald Observatory and the NEID spectrograph at Kitt Peak.

“This one is exciting,” said one of the paper’s co-authors. At 25 light-years, GJ 3378b is close enough that future spectroscopic missions could plausibly characterize its atmosphere — if it has one. That question won’t be definitively answerable until NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory launches in the 2040s, but the discovery substantially shortens the list of high-priority nearby targets.
