Ukraine — 600-Drone Strike Hits Moscow in One of the War’s Largest Aerial Attacks
Ukraine launched hundreds of drones at Russia overnight on August 15–16 in one of its largest aerial attacks of the war, killing at least six people. The death toll from Saturday’s magnitude-7.7 earthquake off Flores island rose to at least 68 as thousands of survivors in East Nusa Tenggara province were still waiting for aid on Monday, Indonesia’s Independence Day. More than 1,300 homes were damaged, nearly 250 destroyed on Flores alone, roughly 5,000 people are in temporary shelters, and 213 people were injured, according to the national disaster agency BNPB. During Jakarta’s Independence Day ceremony, President Prabowo Subianto asked participants to observe a moment of silence for those killed in East Nusa Tenggara and other disaster-hit areas. Obituary — Tommy John, Namesake of the Career-Saving Elbow Surgery, Dies at 83
Tommy John, the left-handed pitcher who won 288 games over a 26-year major-league career and became the first player to successfully return from the elbow reconstruction later named after him, died at 83. John tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow in 1974 at age 31 — an injury that had ended pitchers’ careers until Dr. Frank Jobe’s experimental surgery let John return and pitch effectively for 14 more seasons. “Tommy John surgery” has since become one of the most common procedures in professional baseball, and John’s death was announced days after he sent fans a farewell message.
