Ukraine — Drone Strike on a Tatarstan Refinery Kills 13 in Russia’s Deadliest Hit in Two Years
A Ukrainian drone strike on the Taneco oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, in Russia’s Tatarstan region more than 1,000 kilometers from the border, killed at least 13 people and injured dozens more, according to local officials — the deadliest single attack inside Russia since the war’s early years. Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed its forces struck the refinery, one of Russia’s largest and most technologically advanced, starting a fire at a facility that plays an outsized role in Russian fuel exports. The strike is part of Kyiv’s now near-daily campaign against Russian refining capacity, which has caused fuel shortages across the country in recent months.
Russia’s Belgorod border region was also hit overnight, with regional officials reporting several dead, including a child, and dozens more wounded as hundreds of Ukrainian drones crossed into Russian territory in one of the largest single-night barrages of the war. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council issued a formal list of conditions the United States must meet before Tehran will allow the Strait of Hormuz — through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil transits — to fully reopen: a full withdrawal of US forces from the region, the lifting of the naval blockade and economic sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and reparations for war damage. Officials said reopening the strait no longer depends on the parallel Iran-Oman talks that had appeared close to a deal in the past week, but squarely on Washington accepting Tehran’s terms — a tougher line than analysts had expected given reports the Oman channel was nearing agreement.
Maritime traffic through Hormuz has stayed severely restricted since February, when Iran cut transit sharply in response to US and Israeli strikes, and the toughened stance dims near-term hopes of a resolution to a standoff that keeps rattling global shipping and energy markets.

AI & Tech — OpenAI Shuts Down ChatGPT Atlas, Anthropic Makes Claude Code’s Auto Mode the Default
OpenAI officially retired ChatGPT Atlas, its standalone AI browser, on August 9 — less than a year after its October 2025 launch. Rather than keep it as a separate product, OpenAI is folding Atlas’s browsing and agentic capabilities into a redesigned ChatGPT desktop app alongside Codex, adding multi-tab browsing, downloads and account login support directly inside ChatGPT rather than maintaining a standalone browser.
Separately, Anthropic announced that Claude Code’s “auto mode” — where the agent acts without asking for step-by-step permission unless a move is irreversible, destructive, or reaches outside the working environment — will become the default for Pro, Max and Team plans starting August 14. Users who’ve already set a different permission mode get a one-time prompt about the switch and can revert with Shift+Tab. Anthropic said a study of 1,053 paid testers found auto mode caught 89% of harmful actions in testing, compared with 13.6% for the standard human-review flow it’s replacing as default.

Science — Fruit and Honey, Not Just Meat, May Have Fueled Human Brain Evolution
A new study in Science from researchers at the University of Sydney and the University of Glasgow argues that natural sugars — from fruit, honey and other sweet foods — supplied much of the glucose needed to grow the human brain from roughly 300 grams in early hominins to about 1,500 grams today, over four million years of evolution. The team modeled “obligatory glucose demand” — the glucose required by the brain, red blood cells, kidneys and reproductive tissues — and compared it against the food sources likely available to human ancestors at each evolutionary stage. Because raw starch doesn’t release glucose without cooking, lead author Jennie Brand-Miller argues early humans would have relied on naturally sweet foods well before starchy staples like tubers and grains became dietary mainstays.
The findings complicate the long-dominant narrative that meat-eating was the primary driver of human brain growth, suggesting sugar played an equally important — and previously underappreciated — role.
