August 5 Roundup: Deadliest Kyiv Barrage in Weeks Kills 17; Congo Ebola Toll Passes 1,700; Rust Bans LLM-Written Code; SpaceX Booster Hits the Moon

Previously: July 30’s roundup covered Iran’s failed ballistic missile strike on US forces in Jordan, Zelensky’s Washington visit around Senator Graham’s funeral, the Kumamoto earthquake rescue, and the DRC Ebola outbreak reaching 2,273 cases.

Ukraine — Russian Barrage Kills 17 in Kyiv as Zero Missiles Are Intercepted#

Russia launched one of its deadliest strikes on Kyiv in weeks overnight into Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and wounding 44 others, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Ukraine’s air force reported the assault involved 24 ballistic missiles, four cruise or anti-ship missiles, and 115 attack drones. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 98 of the drones — but none of the incoming missiles. Zelensky said plainly that “ballistic interceptors are what could have saved the lives of those killed today,” pointing to Ukraine’s dwindling stock of Patriot interceptor munitions.

Zelensky said the strikes mainly hit sites “with no connection to the war” — a Nova Poshta logistics center in Kyiv’s Zhuliany district, Novus and Epicentr warehouses, a Rozetka distribution center in Brovary, a brewing company, and a railway station — rather than military infrastructure. In response, Ukraine has continued targeting Wildberries, Russia’s largest e-commerce retailer, with drone strikes; a Wildberries sorting center caught fire in Russia’s Tula region this week. This is the same interceptor-shortage dynamic covered in the July 30 roundup, where Iran’s missile barrage on US forces in Jordan was fully intercepted — underscoring how thin Ukraine’s air-defense stockpile has become by comparison.

Ebola — DRC Death Toll Passes 1,700 in the Fastest-Growing Outbreak on Record#

The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 1,700 people, with the latest government update putting the toll at 1,707 deaths among 3,802 recorded cases. Health officials describe it as the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record, with the virus outpacing contact tracing — 60 to 70% of new cases are now traced to community spread rather than known contacts, and patient zero has still not been identified. Roughly 90% of cases remain concentrated in Ituri province, but confirmed infections have now reached five other provinces, including the major city of Kisangani.

The outbreak — linked to the Bundibugyo virus strain, for which no vaccine or treatment is yet approved — was declared on May 15 and has grown sharply since the July 30 roundup noted 2,273 cases and 796 deaths under newly appointed UN coordinator Julien Harneis. That’s roughly a 67% jump in the death toll in under a week. The response continues to be hampered by a funding shortfall, attacks on health centers, and ongoing armed conflict in the region.

AI & Tech — Rust Bars LLM-Written Code in Its Core Repo; Anaconda Buys AI-Security Startup Enkrypt#

Five teams within the Rust project published an LLM policy on August 5 governing how large language models may be used in contributions to the rust-lang/rust compiler monorepo. The policy’s philosophy, as the maintainers put it: LLMs may “answer questions, analyze, distill, refine, check, suggest, review” — but not “create.” Pull requests containing LLM-generated code must be disclosed as such, face stricter testing and scope requirements than human-authored changes, and reviewers may close non-compliant PRs without further explanation. The policy does not apply project-wide, but it’s a notable stance from one of the most influential open-source toolchains at a moment when AI-assisted coding tools are being pushed hard by vendors.

Separately, data-science platform Anaconda announced on August 4 that it has acquired AI-security startup Enkrypt AI, folding pre-deployment red-teaming across 300+ attack categories and runtime guardrails into the Anaconda Platform. Anaconda cited Enkrypt’s own research — which scanned more than 268,000 tools across 25,000 MCP servers and found over 143,000 vulnerabilities, affecting 73% of the servers scanned — as evidence of how exposed enterprise AI agent deployments currently are.

Space — Discarded SpaceX Rocket Stage Slams Into the Moon#

A spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage struck the Moon early Wednesday near Einstein crater, at 6:35 UTC, traveling roughly 5,400 mph (8,700 km/h). The roughly 8,800-pound stage had been drifting in space since January 2025, when it launched the joint Firefly Blue Ghost-1 and ispace Hakuto-R Mission 2 lunar landers — Blue Ghost landed successfully, while Hakuto-R crash-landed. Astronomers tracking the predicted impact watched for a debris plume kicked up over the lunar surface, a rare opportunity to study a known-mass, known-velocity artificial impact on the Moon in real time.
